What is Spaying and Neutering?

Are you thinking of adopting a furry friend soon? If so, Congratulations from all of us here! Part of the responsibility of pet ownership is considering a spay or neuter procedure for your pet at the appropriate time. Orillia Pet Hospital recommends having your pet spayed or neutered. Read on for additional information on why!

WHAT IS A NEUTER AND A SPAY PROCEDURE?

A neuter procedure consists of removing the testicles of your dog or cat. As a result, the males are considered sterile. The surgical procedure of sterilization for a female dog or cat is known as a spay procedure. A spay procedure removes the ovaries and uterus of your pet. When you talk to your veterinarian about scheduling a neuter or spay procedure for your pet, we will begin the process with an initial exam and pre-surgical bloodwork should your veterinarian recommend it.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NEUTERING /SPAYING MY PET?

There are many health benefits to having your pet spayed/neutered. This procedure can help avoid specific diseases. For female dogs, spay procedures can help to avoid specific cancers and uterine infections (Pyometra).

Spay/Neuter procedures can also help to avoid behavioural issues. When your pet is in heat different behaviours can present themselves such as aggression or territorial behaviours. By spaying/neutering your pet you can help to avoid these behaviours from occurring.

Avoid unplanned puppies/kittens! It only takes one time for your pet to escape outside or get lost from your line of sight for a short amount of time. Pregnancies can be physically demanding on female cats/dogs. You are also helping to avoid stray pet situations in your city. Therefore, spaying or neutering your pet actually helps the entire community!
