Vaccines for Puppies & Dogs

At Orillia Pet Hospital, we know the importance of starting your adorable puppy on the right path to a long and healthy life and that starts with vaccinations. As early as 8 weeks-old is around the time your puppy should have their first vaccines. These injections will prevent your loyal companion from contracting and spreading harmful diseases that have the potential to be fatal.

What is the difference between core and non-core vaccines?

Core vaccines are considered essential for all pets based on the severity of the disease or the risk of exposure to a certain illness. The transmissibility of the disease from pets to humans is another factor of core vaccines. On the other hand, non-core vaccines are recommended ONLY based on the risk of exposure; not every dog needs non-core vaccines to be healthy.

What are core vaccines for dogs?

• Canine parvovirus
• Canine distemper
• Canine hepatitis
• Rabies

In addition, your veterinarian may recommend other vaccines for your puppy/dog. These vaccines may be necessary for your individual canine pal, which includes Canine Influenza, Canine Bordetella, Leptospirosis and Lyme disease.

Are boosters necessary for adult dogs?

Yes, research has shown that adult dogs need to boost their initial vaccines. Without boosters your dog is vulnerable to different infections/diseases. When vaccinated, your dog has immunity because their body has developed antibodies but over time these antibodies will decrease.
