When is blood work recommended for cats and dogs?

Regardless of their health status, your feline or canine pal should have bloodwork done at least once each year. More frequent blood work means your veterinarian can detect illnesses early and monitor their overall health. Here are some reasons why your cat or dog should have bloodwork done:

1. To diagnose their symptoms - if your pet is showing signs of illness, a blood test can determine what is happening internally.
2. Your pet is starting a new medication - blood tests tell our veterinarian how the patient's body will respond to certain medication. Knowing the patient's blood chemistry is important to rule out any possible complications with the new medication.
3. Pre-anesthetic blood tests- before all surgeries, your cat or dog will need blood work to assess how their body will handle the anesthetic. Knowing their health status can prevent anesthesia complications.
4. To learn their baseline health information - knowing normal blood levels can be used for comparison in the future.

How can I prepare my cat/dog to have a blood test?

To prepare for the blood test, your cat or dog should not be given any food for 8 hours prior to the appointment. This precaution ensures that our team gets a good blood sample; eating before having blood work can cause fat droplets to be in the sample. If your loyal companion has certain health conditions or medications our team will provide specific instructions before the appointment.
